Senior Project Geoscientist / Senior Project Engineer – Environmental Services Department

Reporting to the Manager of Environmental Services, the Senior Project Geoscientist / Senior Project Engineer will work with a multidisciplinary team providing services to public and private sector clients. The principal responsibilities of this position are outlined below.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop project schedule(s), track progress and implement controls.
  • Develop and oversee project budgets.
  • Liaise with client on project scope and deliverables, ensuring frequent communication and support throughout project.
  • Prepare project reports for the client (weekly/monthly or otherwise as required), covering project progress, cost and schedule status, as well as ensuring visibility of key project risks, trends and areas of concern.
  • Liaise and coordinate with the engineering and design teams through all stages of the project.
  • Liaise with other professionals whose expertise is required to complete the project.
  • Direct the project team, including sub contractors and consultants.
  • Ensure the technical integrity of all aspects of projects.
  • Provide senior-level review of technical reports.
  • Assess, evaluate and incorporate technical requirements including input from external agencies and stakeholders.
  • Organize and perform site inspections when required.
  • Mentor junior staff as required, at the direction of the Environmental Services Department Manager.
  • Liaise with internal and external contacts, including attending and participating in project-related meetings, recording meeting notes, providing progress reports on deliverables, and other duties.
  • Participate in the short and long-term priorities and objectives including specific department business development initiatives.
  • Initiate and lead efforts to promote the reputation of the firm, securing new clients and projects.
  • Understand and determine the applicability of relevant local, provincial and federal government regulations on an individual project basis.
  • Ensure that timelines are met for all key deliverables.


Significant Qualifications include:

  • 4-year degree in Geoscience / Engineering
  • Registered member in good standing with the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario as a Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) and/or Professional Engineers of Ontario (P.Eng.).
  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience providing all of essential duties and responsibilities noted above.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of project management experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of principles and practices of tender, RFP, RFQ submissions.
  • Extensive knowledge of principles and practices of project management.
  • Solid understanding of theory, concepts and regulations related to field of work.
  • Solid knowledge of principles and practices of financial accounting, budget development and cost control.
  • Strong knowledge of the Ontario Health and Safety Act.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent work ethic and ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously.
  • Excellent time management skills to meet timelines.

This position requires some travel to and from jobsites on a regular basis and the successful candidate will need to have a valid driver’s license and flexibility for travel within Ontario.

Senior Environmental Planner – Environmental Services Department

Your role would be to lead the Environmental Planning service line in a broad range of statutory and delegated environmental planning functions and services. You will lead environmental assessments, manage the consultation process including liaising with stakeholders and complete reporting for Class Environmental Assessment (EA) projects. In this capacity, you will direct and mentor Environmental Planners and Environmental Planning Technicians and will be responsible for technical processes and deliverables. Key Responsibilities:

  • Working with other members of the Environmental Services Team and project managers to lead and manage Environmental Assessment projects. These tasks include but are not limited to:
    • Overseeing the preparation of consultation plans, including government, regulatory agencies and Indigenous communities.
    • Overseeing the preparation of Environmental Assessment reports to secure environmental clearance.
  • Coordinate work with Environmental staff, sub-consultants and interdepartmental staff.
  • Consultation and liaison with project stakeholders including clients and government agencies and maintaining open, transparent communication, answering inquiries and addressing concerns, as required.
  • Lead, coordinate, develop and prepare consultation plans/letters, including government, regulatory agencies and indigenous communities.
  • Provide senior level subject matter expertise on environmental components of in-house projects.
  • Communicate and maintain compliance with corporate Health and Safety requirements.
  • Ensure and maintain high service / product standards throughout the duration of each project.
  • Problem solve where issues have been identified (i.e. field operational constraints, scheduling conflicts, unforeseen issues, competing priorities, etc).
  • Accountability for preparing proposals, project work plans, scheduling spreadsheets, and budget and cost estimates.
  • Liaise with internal and external contacts, including attending and participating in project-related meetings, recording meeting notes, providing progress reports on deliverables, and other duties.

The successful candidate will be responsible for technical and management duties while engaging in multiple engineering projects from inception to completion. This will include preliminary and detail planning and design, tender preparation, construction management and post-construction evaluation. You will provide technical support to staff and other departments and you will provide management support to the Department Manager.

  • Supporting completion of Transportation Engineering and Planning projects for both public and private clients.
  • Highway/road geometric and roadside safety design.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting senior staff with the design of various projects. Technical responsibilities will include completing design reports, preparing drawings and specifications, assisting with inspections, and preparing cost estimates and quantity calculations. Field work including engineering reviews, surveying or minor inspection may also be required from time to time.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and solve complex engineering design challenges in order to satisfy clients’ needs. This will include determining peak flows and simulated hydrographs for a wide variety of watersheds throughout Ontario, hydraulic modelling of pipes, weirs, inlets, spillways, etc., hydraulic modelling of dam break scenarios, development of regulatory floodplain mapping limits, dewatering and erosion and sediment control plans, assessments of scour and ice, and interpretation and expert opinion on drainage issues.
  • Assist with project management of water resource engineering projects including stormwater management design, hydrology studies, floodplain management, environmental assessments, dam safety reviews, drainage infrastructure rehabilitation or replacement designs including trenchless technologies, erosion and sediment control, operations and maintenance plans and manuals, and other projects as assigned.
  • Prepare technical documentation including technical reports, letters, drawings and specifications, and provide construction liaison services.
  • Contribute to business development and marketing activities for existing and new clients and support the preparation of technical proposals.
  • Provide direction to junior engineers, designers, and technicians to maintain the quality of work throughout a project.
  • Participate in a multi-disciplinary team, including municipal, highway, and structural engineering partners, and environmental services.
  • Follow applicable health and safety and environmental policies, procedures, standards and guidelines in the execution of all work.


Significant Qualifications include:

  • Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on Water Resources Engineering.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario or eligible to be licensed within six (6) months of employment.
  • Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience related to the key responsibilities of the position.
  • Knowledge and experience with Conservation Authorities, the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).
  • Experience in the completion of stormwater management studies including Low Impact Development.
  • Experience with hydrology studies including hydrologic modelling using Visual OTTHYMO, EPA SWMM, HEC-HMS and station frequency analysis using HEC-SSP.
  • Experience with 1D and 2D hydraulic modelling in HEC-RAS and GeoHEC-RAS.
  • Highly proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of tools including, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access and Microsoft Project.
  • Experienced and competent in utilizing relevant functions in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills in the technological and commercial fields.


Additional qualifications that are considered an asset:

  • Experience with the ESRI ArcMap Geographic Information System (GIS) software package for the development of hydrology studies and floodplain maps.
  • Experience with Drainage Common Law in Ontario and Municipal Drains under the Drainage Act.
  • Experience with Fluvial Geomorphology and natural channel design.
  • Designated with MTO under Registry, Appraisal and Qualification System (RAQS).
  • Available to undertake intermittent fieldwork across Ontario.
  • Holder of, or eligible to obtain, an Ontario Class G Driver’s License.
