Senior Traffic Project Engineer – Transportation Department

D.M. Wills Associates Limited is in search of a Transportation/Traffic Engineer to join our Transportation Department.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading Traffic Engineering and Transportation Planning studies, engaging in both multi-discipline engineering projects as well as stand-alone Traffic Studies.

Sound communication and technical skills coupled with with excellent leadership and management abilities, as well as superior written and oral presentation skills are essential for this position.


Key Responsibilities::

  • Successful completion of Transportation Engineering and Planning projects for both public and private clients.
  • Manage multiple and/or major projects.
  • Coordinate all facets of assigned projects (proposal, schedule, cost control, quality, communication etc.).
  • Secure new traffic projects/clients and maintain existing clients.
  • Mentor junior staff in traffic engineering and planning.


Significant Qualifications include:

  • A University Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Licensed as a professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario (P.Eng. with PEO).
  • Minimum five (5) years of Transportation Engineering experience, specifically in Traffic Planning and Engineering.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of project management experience.
  • Familiar with OTM Books, TAC/MTO Design Guides, HCM, ITE Manuals, Roadside Design Manual.
  • Working knowledge of Synchro & HCS software programs.
  • MTO experience is considered valuable and will be given preference.
  • Registered (or eligible for registration) in RAQS for various Traffic Engineering categories.

Water / Wastewater Project Engineer

Reporting to the Manager of Environmental Services, the Water / Wastewater Project Engineer will work with a multidisciplinary team providing services to public and private sector clients. The principal responsibilities of this position are outlined below.

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the project management and engineering teams in the planning, design and approval of assigned water and waste water projects.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee preliminary and detail design.
  • Identify and solve complex engineering design issues in order to satisfy clients’ needs while adhering to applicable policies, practices and procedures.
  • Complete preliminary and detailed design calculations in order to support engineering recommendations.
  • Prepare project estimates, budget, schedules and execution plans.
  • Undertake technical and feasibility studies including site investigations.
  • Prepare technical reports.
  • Liaise with internal and external clients, including staff, clients, agencies and sub-consultants.
  • Attend and participate in project-related meetings, recording meeting notes, providing progress reports on deliverables, and other duties.
  • Compile job specifications and coordinate tendering procedures.
  • Manage budgets and project resources, monitoring progress against budget and forecasted schedule.
  • Ensure projects are in compliance with legal requirements and provincial health and safety standards.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting standards are maintained throughout each project.
  • Maintain effective and on-going communications with project-site team.
  • Review the work of junior design staff and complete quality control review for internal technical submissions.
  • Respond to inquiries from stakeholder, clients and government agencies, as required.
  • Understand and determine the applicability of relevant local, provincial and federal government regulations on an individual project basis.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting standards are maintained throughout each project.
  • Ensure that timelines are met for all key deliverables.
  • Follow direction to complete other tasks and projects as required.
  • Stamp and sign engineering drawings and reports under their responsibility.


Significant Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • Member of Professional Engineers of Ontario (P.Eng.).
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience providing some or all of essential duties and responsibilities noted above.
  • General knowledge of principles and practices of tenders and RFPs.
  • General knowledge of principles and practices of project management.
  • Solid understanding of engineering theory, concepts and regulations related to field of work.
  • Strong knowledge of the Ontario Health and Safety Act.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to answer questions from clients and stakeholders in an informed manner.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent work ethic and ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously.
  • Strong statistical knowledge and ability to apply such knowledge to develop practical solutions.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret policy and legislation.
  • Excellent time management skills to meet project timelines.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service during consultation process by keeping stakeholders informed and responding to inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Willing to work closely with others as a team.

Water / Wastewater Project Designer

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the project management and engineering teams in the design and document preparation of CAD-based engineering drawings suitable for approval, tendering and construction.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and produce design drawings.
  • Liaise with staff, clients, agencies and sub-consultants during the design phase.
  • Identify, troubleshoot and solve design issues.
  • Provide updates to direct report on the progress of design projects.
  • Ensure the design integrity of all aspects of projects through design development, detail design, tendering and construction.
  • Assist the Senior Project Manager with other duties, as required.
  • Ensure that timelines are met for all project deliverables.
  • Ensure that all data related to project design is accurately entered and managed within the company’s computer system.
  • Follow direction to complete other tasks and projects as required.
  • Participate in the project quality control process.


Significant Qualifications include:

  • Two (2) year technician or three (3) year Engineering Technology diploma in Civil Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience providing all of essential duties and responsibilities noted above.
  • Certification from the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technologists (C.E.T.) or able to obtain certification.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD / Civil 3D 2017 or newer.
  • Working knowledge of standard GIS software.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • General knowledge of site plans, water and wastewater system component design, and sewer and watermain design.
  • Familiar with surveying equipment and related software including GIS.
  • Understanding of relevant provincial and municipal standards.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, conflict resolution, problem solving, analytical, oral and written skills, together with neat record keeping abilities.
  • Willing to work closely with others as a team.
